Since I started my post-doctorate in the Structural and Functional Venomics Laboratory at IBV-CSIC, our goal has been to better understand snake venom to explore their evolution and improve snakebite treatment. My work has focused on the development and application of proteomic tools to unveil snake venom qualitative and quantitative toxin composition (“venomics”) and the homologous and paraspecific interactions of venoms with novel and commercial antivenoms (”antivenomics”). These two approaches are complementary, since identification of the toxicologically most relevant toxins in venoms is also required for the design of antivenoms.
